My Background

I grew up writing, drawing, and reading everything in sight. I devoured books of all kinds, from science fiction to classic literature to encyclopedias and atlases. I kept diaries and wrote poetry and fiction. I created art, some of it decent enough to display. After a nurturing childhood, I left my parents’ warm nest for college. In 1991 I earned a B.A. in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin, forgoing the more typical B.F.A. in favor of a degree plan that included coursework in physics and calculus. Several years later, I earned an M.A. in art history and museum studies from the University of Denver.

I worked in publications, graphic design, and professional services marketing, and I even did a one-year stint at an art museum — until I realized I’m a terrific worker, but a terrible employee. In 2001, I began freelancing as a marketing writer and editor. Eight years in, I decided to expand my service offerings to meet client needs for design and online marketing. Enter Layer Cake.

But the more the company grew, the less I liked my job. I really missed hands-on, nitty-gritty wordsmithing and working directly with all of my intelligent, amazing clients.

In 2015, I returned to freelancing and I haven’t looked back.
